Cortisol is the stress hormone that is released as a reaction to a stress stimulus and which prepares our bodies for an appropriate "fight or flight" response. The problem with modern day stressors is that they are relentless. There is often no chance to recover from one stressor before we are faced with the next. Our bodies then become stuck midway through the normal stress response with chronically elevated cortisol levels.
